When my boys were little, they LOVED to dress up. They had army costumes, book character costumes, and video game character costumes but their absolute favorite thing was to dress up like superheroes. Tyler, especially, would escort me grocery shopping dressed as Spiderman, Batman, the Hulk, Flash Gordon and many more. He would act like the character and answer only to their name. It became such a regular thing I hardly thought of it when I called him Spidey or Batman.
Once, as we were leaving Target, Spiderman was at an outdoor event at Cold Stone Creamery. I will never forget the look on his face as we pulled up to the curb, rolled down the window and Spidey himself came to the window, shook his little 3 yr old hand and gave him a thumbs up. He squealed with excitement and exclaimed that Spiderman IS WEEALLY WEEL! (Is really real!)
When Tyler was 5, still in the middle of that phase of life, where dressing up in costume was a daily occurrence, I took him to the studio to capture him in his Batman costume.
I had no idea how quickly he would grow out of his desire to dress up, fight imaginary crimes, and answer only to Batman, but it was honestly a matter of just a few months and the costumes were left hanging in the playroom. This image is one of my very favorite now and I’m so glad I took it – during a time when it seemed so ordinary. Parenting has a lot of moments exactly like this. Phases that seem like they will go on forever, like tucking your kids in at night, suddenly are replaced by “goodnight Mom!’ as your teen heads up the stairs alone. That’s why I love the Superhero Mini Sessions.

Be sure to capture your kids in every ordinary stage while they are in it. You never know when they will be on to something new!
